Basic Expedition Leader Award (BEL)

This nationally recognized course which is administered by the British Sports Trust offers potential expedition leaders the chance to develop and enhance existing skills and equips participants to work with groups. This course has been designed as a stepping stone to Mountain Leader Training.

COURSE AIM

To give a leadership qualification to those who wish to operate in open country. BEL trains individuals in three key areas

  • Leadership
  • Technical competence
  • The ability to instruct others

BEL aims to develop the Skills of:-

  • Caring for oneself
  • Caring for others
  • Caring for the countryside
  • Communicating these skills

There are NINE units to the BEL

  1. Plan a walk for a group in lowland countryside
  2. Prepare for a walk in lowland countryside
  3. Establish and maintain safe practice during walks or expeditions
  4. Lead sessions that impart the knowledge and skills required to walk in lowland countryside
  5. Lead a walk in lowland countryside
  6. Navigation for the walk leader
  7. Manage and develop personal walking leadership experience
  8. Management of unaccompanied groups in the countryside
  9. Campcraft for the expedition leader

 

BEL will be useful to those wanting to train and supervise Duke of Edinburgh's Award Expeditions.

Please be advised this is NOT a wild country mountain based award but it will be an excellent background for those wishing to go on to Mountain Leader Training.

Course Breakdown

(i) A total of 131 Hours Tutor Training consisting of:

·9 Evening sessions

·3 Day walks

·1 Day REC First Aid Certificate

·2 Weekends

·1 Day Moderation

Courses can also be run over a different timescale to this, please ask.

(ii) A minimum of 30 Hours Community Service which involves practical instruction with your own group.

Course Cost

Course Cost £ 350.00

Course cost includes course delivery, registration with the CCPR, 1 years insurance, accommodation and all equipment.

The Belfast Activity Centre is a registered Charity and a non-profit making organisation. We aim to keep costs to a minimum. Some bursaries are available each year, please ask.

The course will be based at:

BelfastActivity Centre, Barnett's Stable Yard, Barnett Demesne, Malone Road, Belfast, BT9 5PB

Courses can be run across Northern Ireland.

Course Requirements:

  • Applicants should be 18 years old
  • Applicants should have experience in working with groups and in walking
  • Full attendance is required

Applicants must undertake a First Aid qualification (a REC Level 1 Course is included in this course. It is however advisable that participants should consider the REC Standard Course. Details available at the Centre)

Applicants are advised not to purchase equipment before the course, as advice on equipment and substantial discounts may be available during the course.
